Tell-a-Friend marketing is a great way to increase your website's traffic, but only if you do it right. As I browse through different sites, I see a lot of marketers making mistakes when trying to use Tell-a-Friend scripts to market their businesses. When you're setting up your next Tell-a-Friend marketing system, avoid making these common mistakes.

Tell-a-Friend Mistake #1 - Not being intentional.

So many business owners just toss up a Tell-a-Friend script on their site somewhere thinking that it will bring them lots of traffic. The truth is, this hardly works at all. Most of your visitors won't even see that link that says, "Tell your friends about us." And the ones that do see it, probably won't use it.

To fix this you have to send your visitors to your Tell-a-Friend page intentionally. One way to do this is to direct them right to it after they opt-in to your newsletter. This will put it right in front of them, giving them the option to tell their friends right when they hit it.

Tell-a-Friend Mistake #2 - Not giving to get.

After you have your visitors on your Tell-a-Friend page, what is going to motivate them to tell their friends and colleagues about your business? If you have ridiculously good content that might do it. But maybe not. The best way to get your visitors to tell everyone they know about you is to offer them an incentive to do so. This way they will feel rewarded for doing you a favor, and not just taken advantage of.

Tell-a-Friend Mistake #3 - Trapping your visitors.

This is one of the biggest mistakes that you can make in your Tell-a-Friend marketing system. Even when you deliberately put your Tell-a-Friend page in front of your visitors and then offer them an incentive to tell their friends about you, some of them still don't want to tell anyone. Reasons for this may vary, but that's just the way it is.

If you don't give your visitors a way to continue to the next page without telling their friends, they will feel trapped and abused. You don't want to force anything on your future customers! Always give them a link at the bottom of your Tell-a-Friend page where they can skip it without telling their friends. This will do a lot for you and your reputation in the long run.
