Mariah Carey is Having Twins
It's double the joy this holiday season for pregnant Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon.
"We are having twins," Cannon confirmed Thursday morning during his weekday radio show on 92.3 NOW.
Cannon, 30, acknowledged rumors have been running wild ever since the couple announced the pregnancy on the "Today" show on Oct. 28. But he stressed that they wanted to hold off on releasing any more details.
"There's reasoning behind trying to keep things private and not wanting to give out too much information," he said, referring to the miscarriage the 40-year-old Carey had earlier in their marriage.
But after their announcement, Cannon said, "Everyone started questioning about more things – 'Do you know what it's going to be?' 'Is it a boy?' 'Is it a girl?' Are you having twins?' And then that [last question] just took off and went really, really far and that was the question that I felt like I almost couldn't avoid …. People became fascinated with that, for what reason, I don't really know.
"And the thing right now is that I don't feel like I need to make an announcement or have another announcement, because that's not what it's about," he added. "It's not about making announcements and talking to the press."
Cannon said doctors advised the couple not to share more news about the pregnancy until Carey was further along.
So, why do it now?
"I do feel, in order for my wife and I to have our life and be able to live our life, I feel like we need to be up front and I need to be able to share things with you and be real and come true and come from the heart," the "America's Got Talent" host explained.
From there, after admitting he hadn't even told Carey he would be doing this, Cannon went on to confirm that the couple does indeed have two babies on the way – and revealed that the first people to know were President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
During Sunday's taping of "Christmas in Washington" – which will air Friday on TNT – Carey spoke with the First Family backstage and, like many others, they, too, wanted to know if the pop star was having twins.
"At this point, she hadn't told anybody anything because, like I said, doctors advised to keep it to ourselves until we get further along and stuff," Cannon shared. "[But] because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed, and she shared with the President and the First Lady that we are having twins."
He added that it's "an awesome story" they will one day be able to tell their children, who at this point, are "A-okay" after an ultrasound Carey had Wednesday night.
"Both babies are healthy and in tip-top shape," Cannon said. "The doctors were extremely happy; we were extremely happy. There you have it!"
"I'm probably going to get in trouble for telling this now but I felt like I had to share with you. She got to share with the President; I'm sharing it with you, right here on 92.3 NOW," Cannon concluded.
