DJ MARLEY MARL and MIKE MANCINI BIRTHDAY
BASHMENT LIVE AT CIELO wed., Sept. 29, 2010
It was a night at Club Cielo, located in the meat packing section of Manhattan at 18 Little West 12th Street btw 9th Ave. and Washington St. The party was being thrown by The Golden Era Radio as a tribute birthday to the following MARLEY MARL, Mike Mancini and Brown Hornhit.
The tunes of the night were played by Big Rich and Christian Rich of The Neptunes/Star Trak and Q-tip and of course the guest of honor MARLEY MARL.
Dj Marley Marl, one of my favorite producers and djs from when I attended the 5th grade. During the 1980s, they weren't as many hip hop producers as you see today. Back then, it was either your an emcee or an dj. The main thing to be in the '80s was an emcee. To be an emcee in the '80s it was to produce quality lyrics. Nowadays, its to produce quantity albums despite whether the lyrics are great. That is where hip hop have changed drastically and the creativity declined. The thing that expanded in hip hop though, was indeed production. Although, every single hip hop producer that comes out today you may listen to their work and think their material are trash. Be that, as it may if it wasn't for production forefathers like Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Dj Jazzy Jay, Diamond D, The Late Jammaster Jay, The Late Scott La Rock there wouldn't be any star studded hip hop producers today like.... Swizz Beats, Dj Drama, Just Blaze, Rza, Havoc, Mannie Fresh, Bangledesh, Justice League, Kanye West, Premier, 9th Wonder, Madlib, Black Milk, Nottz and the late Jay Dilla. Look I can go for days just listing all the top notch producers that came up and made a mark for themselves during the 30 plus years of hip hop's existences.
I'm not though, I'm only going to talk about one man. The man who comes from the largest housing project in Queens. The man whose radio nemesis at one point and time was Kool Dj Red Alert. The man who produced the record that will go down in history as the forever played, hip hop record of four decades. The man who produced one the hottest records that stirred up hip hop controversy between boroughs in the mid 80s. If y' all don't know by now, I'm only talking about one man and thats DJ MARLEY MARL.
I knew about this event from the previous week. I rsvp'd as soon as I got the email, well at least I thought I did. Apparently, I did send an rsvp and in return received an confirmation. Upon arrival at the door it seems I never given a name that I will be attending the event under. I was so caught up in the hype of seeing Marley Marl and just being in the mix it slipped my mind. I do want to give thanks to the lovely ladies at the door that ended up letting me in solely on the strength that I did have the rsvp confirmation email inside my phone.
Once me and my homie, D Biggz got inside I was happy with what I seen the four lovely boricua mamis shaking their rumps all night. Along with dancing chiquitas comes open bar sponsored by Belvedere. Look like Marley Marl and Mancini were gonna have a birthday party night to remember. The fucked up apart I couldn't drink any belvie muh fuckaz wuz str8 teasin' me all night. Remind me, next time not too go to a spot serving open bar.
If it wasn't for this though, The Def Jam RapStar. A new video game that was being demonstrated in the back room. It's a real cool game. Its a hip hop karaoke game with different types of hip hop tunes from old school to new school to freestyle. You have an option to karaoke or freestyle over original production donated to the gaming system. How the system works it connects to the playstation 2. The people there got hooked off that game one gurl particularly. The most common songs chosen to be sung multiple times were Puff Daddy and The Family "It's all about the benjamins", Lil' Kim and Lil' Cease "Crush on You" and Lil' Wayne "A Milli". There were other songs programmed inside the Def Jam rapstar like the outstanding performance of Slick Rick "Children's Story" performed by Queensbridge only female lyricist, Roxanne Shante. Even a, "class a performance" came from one of the men being honored for tonight, Mike Mancini. It was also his birthday and he lit up the Def Jam Rapstar game over Biz Markie's Just A Friend, he made it a tiny bit betta than the original by adding his own personal adlibs to the song.
This Def Jam Rapstar gaming system is probably going to be one of the coolest items out on the market. In fact, the Def Jam Rapstar comes out today, Oct. 5th, 2010. I'm thinking about buying the system for myself and I'm not a video game person. You would have never known that had you been with me at the party. A good majority of my night I spent in the back room enjoying that game. I was back there so much I forgot, Lords Of The Underground was on stage scheduled to perform.
Indeed, I had a great time and I enjoyed myself but my only regret though. As much as I enjoyed the Def Jam Rapstar and watching the performance of others. I wish I participated with everyone else. If I could rewind the time back to last Wed, Sept. 29th I would have love to chosen one or two of these songs, Special Ed "I got it made" or Mic Geronimo "The Shit is real". I doubt they would have had Mic Geronimo programmed in there but I'm pretty sure Special Ed "I got it made" would be in there.
Nonetheless, I had a good time. I got a chance to meet Marley Marl and take lots of footage. And I get to share it with my readers. What more can I ask..
